Shark Species

Shark angling has become an increasingly popular sport in Namibia. This increase in popularity has lead to an active conservation program for the bigger shark species. When caught, all Bronzies are tagged and returned to the sea, as part of the ongoing conservation and study programme. The shark angling is all year round.

The most popular species Copper shark or Bronzie, (Carcharhrinus brachyurus), weighs between 40 kg and 200 kg and offers a real challenge for the keen angler. A fast, large and powerful shark that is the apex predator of the coastal water zone. It feeds on bony fishes and other shark species.
The Spotted Gully shark or Spotty, (Triakis megalopterus), can be identified by black spots on the body. It is commonly caught by shore anglers. It can attain a weight of over 30 kg.
